Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold vs OnePlus Open: A Detailed Foldable Comparison

Google’s Pixel 9 Pro Fold has arrived, priced at $1,799.  This is Google’s second-generation foldable, offering a larger yet lighter design compared to the previous Pixel Fold. It also comes with more RAM, new screens, and several AI-powered features.

Announced at the Made by Google event, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold enters a crowded foldable phone market. One of its main competitors is the OnePlus Open, which launched last year at $1,700. However, the OnePlus Open isn’t expected to get an update until 2025.

The OnePlus Open is $100 cheaper than the Pixel 9 Pro Fold before any carrier discounts, and it offers 512GB of internal storage, double what Google’s foldable provides. However, there are some trade-offs. Since the OnePlus Open was launched in 2023, it comes with last year’s flagship specs, like the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor.

Additionally, you lose a year of software updates with the OnePlus Open. It offers four years of Android OS updates, while the Pixel 9 Pro Fold provides seven years. If you purchase the OnePlus Open in 2024, you’ll only receive updates until 2027, whereas the Pixel 9 Pro Fold should continue to get updates until 2031. This extended software support is a key advantage of Google’s foldable.

In terms of hardware, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is Google’s lightest foldable yet, weighing 257 grams—nearly an ounce lighter than last year’s model. The OnePlus Open is even lighter at 239 grams, but the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is thinner, outslimming the Z Fold 6 by about 1.7 millimeters.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold  has a better water resistance rating of IPX8,  it can be submerged in 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes, similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 6. The OnePlus Open has an IPX4 rating, which protects it from light rain or splashes but isn’t designed to be submerged. Neither phone is fully dust-proof, which is common among foldables. However, the 2023 Motorola Razr Plus does offer some dust protection with an IP54 rating.

Both the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and the OnePlus Open feature five cameras: three on the back, including a telephoto lens, and two front-facing cameras (one on the cover display and one on the inner screen). The OnePlus Open’s telephoto lens offers 3x optical zoom, while the Pixel 9 Pro Fold provides 5x zoom.

When it comes to battery life, the OnePlus Open has a slightly larger battery at 4,805 mAh compared to the Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s 4,650 mAh. While a larger battery often means longer battery life, this isn’t always the case. Notably, the OnePlus Open lacks wireless charging, which the Pixel 9 Pro Fold includes.

However, the OnePlus Open does come with a 67-watt charger in the box (using a USB-A to USB-C cable), which should charge faster than the Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s 45-watt charger. Most smartphones sold in the US no longer include a charger in the box, so this is a rare inclusion.

Who is better between Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold vs OnePlus Open?

The OnePlus Open emerges as the stronger contender in terms of raw performance, display quality, and value for money. Its advanced hardware makes it a top choice for users who prioritize speed, multitasking, and a vivid viewing experience. On the other hand, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold shines with its unparalleled camera capabilities and a highly polished software experience, making it ideal for those who value photography and seamless integration within the Google ecosystem.

Performance: The OnePlus Open is powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, which outperforms the Tensor G3 found in the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. This makes the OnePlus Open better suited for users who demand top-tier performance, especially in gaming and heavy multitasking scenarios.

  1. Display Quality: The OnePlus Open features a brighter, more vibrant AMOLED display with a peak brightness of 2200 nits, making it exceptionally good for outdoor visibility and media consumption. In contrast, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s LTPO OLED display, while still high-quality, maxes out at 1600 nits, making it slightly less bright but more energy-efficient.
  2. Software Experience: The Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s software is deeply integrated with Google’s ecosystem, offering exclusive features like enhanced voice recognition, AI-driven photography, and seamless integration with Google services. The OnePlus Open’s OxygenOS, while fast and feature-rich, doesn’t offer the same level of integration or exclusive features, though it’s highly customizable and user-friendly.

Camera System: The Pixel 9 Pro Fold leverages Google’s prowess in computational photography, offering superior image processing, especially in low light and challenging conditions. It’s the better option for photography enthusiasts who want to capture professional-grade photos without manual adjustments. The OnePlus Open offers a versatile camera setup with higher megapixel counts but lacks the advanced computational features of the Pixel.

  1. Battery Life and Charging: Both devices offer solid battery performance, but the OnePlus Open has an edge with its faster 67W charging, which can charge the device from 0 to 100% in about 40 minutes. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold, with its larger 5000mAh battery, offers longer endurance on a single charge but charges slower at 30W.
  2. Price and Value: The OnePlus Open is priced more competitively, starting at $1,599, offering better value for those who want flagship performance and display quality without the premium cost associated with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s advanced camera and software features.

Supporting Information

  • Performance: The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in the OnePlus Open offers a more powerful CPU and GPU configuration, making it faster in benchmark tests and real-world performance. It’s particularly beneficial for heavy gaming, multitasking, and users who require high processing power for tasks like video editing.
  • Display Quality: The OnePlus Open’s display is superior in brightness and color accuracy, which enhances the experience of watching HDR content and using the phone in direct sunlight. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s display, while slightly dimmer, is more power-efficient due to the LTPO technology, which dynamically adjusts the refresh rate to save battery life.
  • Camera System: The Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s camera system, backed by Google’s AI and software, delivers exceptional photo quality, particularly in low-light environments. Features like Magic Eraser, Super Res Zoom, and Real Tone make it stand out for photography enthusiasts. The OnePlus Open, although offering a higher megapixel count, doesn’t match the Pixel’s image processing, but it provides greater versatility in shooting options.
  • Software Experience: The Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s Android 14 experience is polished and feature-rich, with exclusive features like Google Assistant-powered routines, Pixel-specific wallpapers, and tighter integration with Google services. OxygenOS on the OnePlus Open is known for its speed and customization options, making it appealing to users who want control over their device’s interface and features.
  • Battery Life and Charging: The OnePlus Open’s 4800mAh battery paired with 67W fast charging ensures that users can quickly top up their battery, making it convenient for those with a busy lifestyle. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s larger 5000mAh battery provides longer usage time, but the slower charging speed could be a drawback for users who need to charge their phone quickly.
  • Price and Value: The OnePlus Open offers a more balanced package at a lower price point, making it a better value proposition for users who don’t need the absolute best in camera technology but still want top-tier performance and a high-quality display. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold justifies its higher price with advanced camera features and a premium software experience, appealing to users who prioritize these aspects
